We are a major department established in the year 1980, fully equipped with all modern amenities, with qualified staff working round the clock on all days of the week. The Department of General Surgery has 5 units with experienced faculty. Outpatient services are provided on all days of the week. All new and old patients are seen, and necessary emergency and elective investigations and procedures are done as required.

The department of General Surgery takes in 20 postgraduate students per year, all selected through NEET. All faculty members are trained in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic surgery). Endotrainers are available to postgraduate students so as to aid them in learning laparoscopic skills. CMEs and workshops moderated by highly esteemed guest faculty are conducted annually.

The Department library is well-stocked with the latest edition of books and comes with Wi-Fi facility. Postgraduate teaching programmes such as Journal Club, Subject Seminars &Clinical Case Discussion are conducted regularly. 30 Papers and 15 Posters are being presented every year by our postgraduates at the state and national levels as well as at the Surgical Society of Bangalore every October.

Workshop on Research Methodology

Hemorrhoids & Fistula Workshop

Hemorrhoids & Fistula Workshop

Hernia Update

Our department has been conducting various CME’s each year to uplift the standards of surgical care and to continue upgrading our skills. Each of these workshops we conducted have helped us to cope up with the current trends in surgical practice. They have also provided the required exposure to the surgical residents in the department.

We have conducted workshops on clinical research and operative technique in the past years. Some of the workshops we have conducted are

Workshop on research methodology This was a one of a kind workshop which has helped our residents to understand the importance of evidence based surgery. It has highlighted some of the important points in finding a research topic and also do critical appraisal of the topic. The topics covered were basic statistics, evidence based surgery, literature search and how to write a paper in this workshop has helped our residents to understand research methodology and apply the same for their thesis.

Haemorrhoids and fistula workshop Eminent faculties in the field conducted this workshop with an emphasis on Laser haemmorrhoidectomy and use of staplers for haemorrhoids. These latest techniques have been practiced widely in recent times and have proven to provide good results. The introduction of these facilities to our residents has given them an opportunity to learn these new procedures.

Hernia update This workshop was conducted in order to improve our understanding of the latest advancements in hernia surgery. The workshop included live operative surgeries on Desarda technique which is a one of the tissue repairs for hernia surgery which is becoming popular. We also had surgeries on Laparoscopic repairs for hernia, Endoscopic Rives stoppa repair for ventral hernia surgeries. All the live surgeries conducted here have updated the knowledge of inguinal anatomy among the residents.

We have been conducting surgical society programmes regularly every year in the month of September.
