Department of Surgery

From the HOD’s Desk

Our department is active in academics and also has a decent workload to enable adequate surgical exposure and experience for post graduates. Almost all the staff have publications to their credit. As far as the undergraduates are concerned there is now a focus on early exposure in the 3rd term to practical procedures such as suture removal, removal of Foleys catheter, dressings of wounds  and the concept of asepsis especially hand sterilization. Post graduate training emphasizes on surgical principles and a sound knowledge of surgical anatomy pertaining to the relevant surgical procedure. Much emphasis is placed upon basic sciences including physiology. From the legal angle workshops have been and are being conducted to expose and create awareness of legal responsibilities in so far as clear communication and legal documentation of informed consent as well as proper and systematic case sheet entry and maintenance of records. Surgical skills development workshops are in place for 1st year post graduates to enable efficient suturing techniques and eventually graded acquisition of CVP line insertion,CPR,Endotracheal intubation,FAST. So that these skills are acquired in the first year of post graduation. Post graduates are also exposed to palliative humane treatment of terminal cancer patients. Clinical skills are developed to the extent where clinical diagnosis is assisted by necessary relevant investigations to confirm the clinical diagnosis rather than vice versa.

The end result should be a confident post graduate with skills and surgical principles to manage competently varieties of surgical patients with minimal morbidity and mortality.

The department of surgery in addition to teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate are also involved in teaching of Dental, D Pharma and Physiotherapy students.
