Surgery of children has been practiced since the time of Sushruta. However only after Second World War, it was identified as independent entity in USA and UK. In India Pediatric surgery as a separate sub speciality was started in mid1960. So Pediatric surgery is relatively a new sub-speciality of 55 years. Pediatric surgery is a broad sub-speciality involving pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric thoracic surgery, pediatric GI surgery, pediatric urology and minimal access surgery. The role of pediatric surgeon starts from the day of conception of fetus with respect to antenatal counselling of congenital conditions, passes through surgical conditions of neonatal, infancy, toddler, and preschool upto adolescence. At KIMS, pediatric surgery as a department was started by Dr Somshekariah, the 1stMCh qualified pediatric surgeon of Karnataka in 1993. Since its inception the department has grown over the years. The department is fully fledged catering to the neonatal and adolescent children requiring surgical management. Yearly we see around 3000-3500 children with various surgical conditions in the out- patient department. About 500 children are operated every year, which includes open, laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures with the help of anaesthetic counterparts. On the academic front regular classes are being taken for undergraduates to impart knowledge and awareness about common pediatric surgical conditions. General surgery post graduate trainees are rotated through pediatric surgery postings to impart exposure in surgical cases. To our credit we have a total of 20 national and international publications from our department. The postgraduate students from surgery and paediatrics are encouraged to present case reports and papers of pediatric surgery topics in various local, state and national conferences.Facilities Antenatal counselling of congenital conditionNeonatal surgery- Tracheoseophageal fistula/ Congenital diaphragmatic hernia/ intestinal obstructions/ congenital lung conditionsPediatric urology- undescended testis/ phimosis/ pelvi ureteric junction obstruction/ Vesico ureteric reflux/ hypospadias/ epispadias.Pediatric neurosurgery- hydrocephalus/ meningomyelocele repairPediatric thoracic surgery- empyema/ congenital lung conditionsPediatric Gastro intestinal surgery- choledochalcyst/ biliary atresia/ congenital pancreatic condition/ pancreatitis/ appendicitis/ meckels diverticulitis/ malrotationGeneral Pediatric surgery- sinus of neck, torticollis, Thyroglossal cystPediatric minimal invasive surgery- laparoscopy and thoracoscopyPediatric endosurgery- cystoscopyPediatric oncosurgery- Wilms tumor, neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, ovarian tumourFaculty Dr Ravikiran KAssociate professorMS, MChEmail – mailravi11@gmail.comDr Pramod SAssociate professorMS, MChEmail – pramodbmc76@gmail.com |
