Library

The KIMS Library was established in 1981 when the College started functioning. Year after year it has made steady progress and has grown into a collection of 21,500 Medical Books & 10,150 bound volumes with subscription to 145 periodicals yearly on various Medical subjects. There is also a library in the hospital complex to cater to the clinical departments with a seating capacity of 100 there are 4,600 books available in this library. Both the central library and the hospital library have in addition a digital library with internet facilities. In addition to above all departments have a department library of their own. The library is open from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm on all workings days. Xerox facilities are available in both the libraries. There are also reading rooms for the students to bring in their own reading material to study.

Library Facilities
  • Reference Section - Latest editions of books & newly arrived periodicals are arranged subject wise and made available to be read in library premises.
  • Home Lending - Older editions of books and journals which are one month old are issued for home reading to staff and post-graduate students.
  • Audio-visual facility - A separate section having audio-visual ( L.C.D projectors) equipment is made available for students and staff.
  • Photocopying facility - Available to all on payment.
  • Inter Library Loan - Reciprocal arrangement for sharing the resources of the libraries in Bangalore is made available to students and staff of Institute.
  • Computer Search for holdings in the library - A database of all the books and bound volumes has been prepared and can be searched from any terminal on LAN within the Library.
  • Medline database Search on CD-ROM Readers can search Medline from 1966 onwards from two terminals The current (1998) disc of Medline is kept for searching information free of charge for all members of the Institution.
  • Internet Search & E-mail facility search. .
  • Book-Bank facility - Books are issued to undergraduate students from lower socio-economic strata for one year for study at home.
Services

Document circulation services .

Requisitioned books are issued to postgraduate research scholars and faculty members. The library does not lend books to undergraduate students for home. Xerox copy of journals is allowed. Audio-visual materials and CDs are for in hours use only.

Reference services

References Services is a personal aid provided to the user by the library staff in interpreting library collection for study and research. The Library staffs assist users to locate needed information from the available information resources. On the basis of collection library provides services to its users.

Photocopying .

Through this services library provides photocopies of articles from journals and books to the users as and when requested further users can also send and receive Fax messages from library

Current awareness services

Library has used four main ways to help health sciences professionals keep abreast of latest information.

  1. Telephone call
  2. Displays of new books and journals
  3. productions of library publications, i.e. new acquisition list
  4. EPAC access related to library resources anywhere in the campus
  5. Book exhibitions by major publishers.

Audio-visual services

Through this service library provides audio and video cassettes CD’s slides of teaching programs, in the A.V. Room

Inter Library Loan services

The library helps to obtain books from other medical colleges in Bangalore.

Computers services

The computer lab of the library offers the following computer services to users

  • Internet browsing and online journals access.
  • facilities for preparing presentation materials such as slides, transparencies and color scanning
  • Assisting the students and faculty members for editing projects/thesis, data analysis, setting the file to the required quality of print and printing.
  • Color scanning CD writing, with laser printing and DOT matrix printing.

CD-ROM Service

The CD-ROM collection of the library contains bibliographical databases . Full text databases and ADAM Comprehensive CD. The bibliographical databases include MEDLINE on Silver Platter. Full text databases include back volume of medical journals articles, medical year books review articles, text books etc.

MEDLINE on Silver Platter:

Medline on Silver platter is the USA National Library on Medline’s bibliographical database covering the fields of medicine and pre-clinical sciences. The MEDLINE databases contain all citations published in index medicus as well as citations published in the international 4600 biomedical journals in 70 languages are covered by MEDLINE. MEDLINE is an efficient time saving comprehensive literature search which can be easily and conveniently used by professionals without any background in the library or computer sciences. Monthly updates are provided MEDLINE on Silver Platter covers the years 1966 to 2000.

HELINET SERVICE FROM RGUHS.

HELINET: - Health Sciences Library & information Net work.

Consortium for sharing information resources and subscribing to e-journals. RGUHS subscribes around 300 high quality journals in e-versions.
