The subject of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is taught for III, IV and Vth term students during their II MBBS course. 

     The department is situated in the fourth floor of college premises at Banashankari. The department is having well equipped practical hall, demonstration hall, research laboratory, museum, departmental library and seminar hall.  All staff rooms, departmental office, post graduates room, boys lounge and girls lounge are situated in the same floor.

     The medico legal works will be conducted at Mortuary which is situated in KIMS hospital at VV Puram, Bangalore. The Mortuary has three autopsy tables with necessary postmortem instruments. The mortuary has cold storage facility to accommodate seven dead bodies. Staff and PG rooms are also present in the mortuary to look after the day to day medico legal work.

     The syllabus taught is in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Medical Council of India.   The students are taught regarding Medical law and ethics, Death and its changes, Asphyxial deaths, Injuries, Sexual Offences and related issues, Forensic Psychiatry and other topics of medico legal importance.  They are also taught Toxicology – common poisons- its signs and symptoms, investigations, treatment and postmortem findings.

     Fifteen days postings for the undergraduate students during which they will be shown procedure to conduct post mortems, examination of infant deaths, examination of rape victim and accused individuals and other medico legal related cases.  They will also learn to examine skeletal remains and issuing of various types of medical certificates.

     Post graduate students assist in conducting all the post mortems.  They are also actively involved in age estimation, examination of victim and accused in cases of sexual offences, examination of skeletal remains etc.  Seminars, Journal clubs, Post mortem review meetings are conducted regularly to train the post graduate students.  Post graduate students involve actively in the teaching programme of under graduate students like conducting theory classes, practical classes and tutorials.

     Post graduate students accompany the teaching staff members to the various courts in and around Bangalore and equip themselves in the court procedures.

     The department is recognized by the Government of Karnataka to conduct medico legal autopsies.  The Bangalore city police are utilizing our postmortem and other medico legal services in cases pertaining to twelve police stations of Bangalore south.  Postmortem of deaths due to traffic accident in Bangalore south and all medico legal deaths occurring in our hospital irrespective of Police station will be conducted from our department.
     The staff and postgraduate students actively take part in academic matters and presented various scientific papers in state and national level.

     The four postgraduate students who have successfully completed their MD degree are presently working in different medical colleges across India.

POSTGRADUATE COURSE OFFERED:

MD degree - Four seats per year - recognized by MEDICAL COUNCIL OF INDIA.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITES:

Dr K ANANDA was the president of KARNATAKA MEDICO LEGAL SOCIETY for the year 2001-02 and the department successfully conducted the annual conference of KAMLS – KIMS – 2002.

The teaching staffs of the department have published various articles related with medico legal work in journals at national and international level.

The staff and the postgraduate students have presented scientific papers at national and state conferences.
